Baah! Air! I have finally finished my newest mixtape brainchild; Summer of science. It’s all recorded live, using some fancy new gear i have just recently gotten the hang of. Available for super-free download right away, how nice!
I should mention that this mixtape is released under my DJ Lys moniker, not Totem. The difference lies in the style of music, Totem plays Hiphop and Funk related music, Dj Lys is on more of a house tip.
This mixtape is themed around my love for moody but danceable electronic music. It was made to accompany both a day in the park with a boombox and a walk in the rain with headphones, hope people agree. I’m using an absolute minimum of fancy mixing on this one, this is very straight forward. I’ve done this since it is supposed to be the first in a series of mixtapes, this one being the “moody, simple one”. The other tapes i have planned will utilize much more of my accumulated soundsystem, but you’ll just have to wait and see.

Yeehaw! I finished soldering together my first dub siren some time ago, so now it’s time to share! I made a quick video with me playing it, and took some pictures while I made it. A heapload(nice word, no?) of thanks to Dave from superset sounds for helping me out with it, i built it based on his original schematics.
The box is an old shaving box from the early 1900’s, and yes, i soldered the whole thing myself from scratch. Thankyouverymuch.
I’m planning on streamlining the production a bit (this one took me ages to make) and making some more, with custom built wooden casings, hopefully laser engraved. Give me a holler in the comments of what you think, or if the new ones i’m making sounds worth bying. I’ll post about them too of course, when i get them made that is.
I’ve been doing some writing for UPOP, a bloggish website for music/art/lifestyle stuff lately. And more importantly, I’ve been working towards getting a podcast running for them. The system has been in the works for some time now, and with the latest upgrade of their wordpress system, it’s right there! I also made the visual work around the project, represented by the graphic and the video you see here.
The podcast is gonna feature dj Mixes from all sorts of local djs, interviews with bands and such, and all sorts of other stuff you might catch on tape. Go have a look at UPOP.no and the UPOPCAST page, or just take my word that it rocks and subscribe right away. If you can’t figure it out, blame the tech guys, just not me.
Ever since i first found out how to pimp my MySpace profile so many years ago, i have been tugging my hair in frustration. The cause of my woe is of course MySpace’s horrible page layout, it’s never-W3C-compliant-code, and the never ending “an error has ocurred”, among others. But it is the de facto standard for bands and a lot of other things on the web, so we just have to make due.
Don’t get me wrong though. Emo kids aside, MySpace has revolutionized the way we look at music on the web, and finding new bands to listen to is ever-increasingly fun and easy. Not being represented on the space of spaces is ridiculous, any good band knows not to say no to free advertisement.
My main DJ alias, Totem, has had a myspace page since 2005, from shitty glitter to glorious GIFs. I revamped the entire page recently, being to embarrassed to have such a horrid thing represent me professionally, trying to make it more simple and striking, but still using myspace’s usual layout to help people navigate. I wrote the whole thing in dreamweaver (with photoshop doing graphics) to control the code, and the result is a piece of HTML markup that even your grandma could read and make sense of.
Now, where am i getting at, where is the newsworthy item?
The thing is, my main club, REWIND!, has been in dire need of MySpace representation for some time, and now i finally got around to it. Since my other page was just finished, i simply took that design, snazzed the color scheme around, and there you have it. It’s not revolutionary design, but than again i’m not trying to do that. I’m just a brother trying to make something that loads fast and looks pleasing, cool?
Or well, calling it a song is stretching it, i guess. It’s more of a remix/re-edit/re-fuckup. We’re releasing this as part of the promotion for REWIND! this season, you can listen to it and dowload it from this thingamajing right here:
This fall i made a new mixtape named Talkbox Fever, mainly revolving around the American sound of early hiphop and Electro in the late 80’s.
It’s been featured on the FSR soundsystem podcast, i made it available in a pretty limited edition pink CD version, and now you can dowload the whole thing for free, from the comfort of your own armchair, or bean bag if you prefer. I already got a few hundred downloads already, so seems people liked it. At least the folks over at Underskog.no really liked it, one member acctually created a new “mixtapes”-forum in my honor. Gee whiz.
